Halifax Theatre for Young People

Tessa Mendel and Chris Heide founded Halifax Theatre for Young People (HTYP) in 2008 to address the fact that there was no facility-based, professional theatre singularly devoted to young audiences operating within Metro Halifax.  Our mandate is to create meaningful, engaging theatre experiences for young people and their families. Striving for artistic excellence in all production areas, HTYP honours the imaginations of audiences of all ages and strives to ignite the unlimited capacity of youth for empathy and an understanding of diverse human experience.

HTYP’s ongoing activities include producing a Mainstage Production each fall at Alderney Landing Theatre, and organizing Next Stages Theatre Festival for Families in partnership with Eastern Front Theatre, offered as part of their Stages Theatre Festival, each spring.   A key component of the Festival is our new play development program which supports playwrights in creating relevant and stimulating new plays for young audiences. We alsoencourage critical thinking through our development of educational materials and workshops for school groups so that they may explore each play’s more complex and challenging themes.
